An abusive spouse who fatally stabbed his wife in a violent knife assault while their children were asleep has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years.

The perpetrator, Mompati Dodo Isaacs, took the life of 33-year-old Keotshepile Naso Isaacs in their residence in North Berwick, East Lothian, on January 1, 2024. Isaacs, aged 39, viciously stabbed his wife nine times in the head and neck during a sustained attack on New Year’s Day.

Following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, Isaacs was convicted of the murder in September. Subsequently, he received a minimum term of 21 years in prison during the sentencing at the same court. Addressing Isaacs, Judge Lady Ross remarked that while New Year’s Day typically symbolizes new beginnings, Isaacs ended Naso’s life through a horrific act of violence.

The judge highlighted the brutality of the attack, emphasizing the defenseless nature of the victim, who suffered from multiple stab wounds in her own home. Despite attempts by concerned friends to alert the authorities after receiving distressing messages from the victim, Naso could not be saved.

Isaacs, who had relocated to Scotland from Botswana with his wife several years earlier, attempted to justify his actions during the trial by citing provocation and mental health issues. However, the jury dismissed his claims of diminished responsibility, leading to his murder conviction.

Lady Ross sentenced Isaacs to life imprisonment, emphasizing the irrevocable loss suffered by Naso’s family, particularly her children, due to his actions. Isaacs, appearing via videolink from prison, expressed remorse through his legal representative, acknowledging the devastating impact of his actions on his loved ones.

The tragic incident has left a profound impact on both the victim’s immediate family and relatives in Botswana, underscoring the enduring grief caused by the senseless act of violence.
