A recent report by consumer advocate Which? revealed that some major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. The study found that smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing larger brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value.

Internet connection issues, including frequent dropouts, slow download speeds, and service outages, were identified as common complaints among broadband users. A significant 91% of customers reported facing issues with their internet service over the past year, indicating that less than one in ten households enjoyed uninterrupted connectivity.

Sky and Virgin Media were highlighted for poor performance in terms of connection dropouts and slow speeds. Sky users, in particular, expressed dissatisfaction with broadband speed. Other providers like TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received low ratings from customers.

On the positive side, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic were commended for their reliability, with fewer reported issues compared to major brands. Plusnet stood out among larger providers, outperforming competitors such as Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.

Which?’s findings align with previous research showing that smaller broadband companies consistently excel in reliability, customer service, and value compared to major providers. The consumer advocate urges households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if dissatisfied with their current service, recommending the use of Ofcom’s broadband checker for network availability information.

The report prompted a response from Virgin Media, emphasizing their ongoing investments in service quality and citing positive rankings in various broadband categories. The company highlighted its performance in download speed, upload speed, quality consistency, video experience, and reliability, as recognized by independent data from Opensignal.

In conclusion, consumers are encouraged to seek high-quality broadband services, with the power to switch providers for better experiences. The competitive market offers various options, empowering customers to make informed choices based on service quality and reliability.
