An urgent warning has been issued for owners of Android and iPhone devices, highlighting the dangers associated with using unofficial chargers. With many new devices no longer including chargers in the box, consumers are often forced to purchase separate adapters, typically costing at least £20. This expense has led many to seek cheaper alternatives, such as unofficial chargers available on platforms like Amazon for under £8, significantly less than official branded products from companies like Apple and Samsung.
Despite the allure of lower prices, consumer watchdog Which? has uncovered alarming safety risks associated with these budget chargers. Following an investigation that involved purchasing chargers from various online marketplaces, including Amazon, AliExpress, B&Q Marketplace, Debenhams Marketplace, and eBay, Which? found that nine chargers posed a risk of electric shock due to substandard manufacturing practices, while eight were identified as potential fire or explosion hazards.
Among the findings was a counterfeit charger designed to mimic Apple’s USB-C 35W Power Adapter, complete with Apple branding on its packaging. This deceptive product, priced at £11.99, failed safety tests conducted by Which?. The investigation also revealed chargers lacking essential UK safety markings and devices with hazardous internal circuitry, increasing the likelihood of overheating, fire, or explosion.
This isn’t the first time Which? has raised concerns about the sale of unsafe electrical products on online platforms. Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?, emphasized the severe consequences of poorly designed electrical items, calling for stricter product safety regulations and enforcement measures for online marketplaces.
In response to these findings, Amazon reiterated its commitment to customer safety, mentioning its collaboration with Electrical Safety First to promote safe charging practices. The company assured that all products sold on its platform adhere to relevant laws and regulations, and stated that the identified chargers had been removed. B&Q also emphasized its dedication to product safety and a proactive approach to ensure recalled items are not available on its Marketplace platform.
Consumers are advised to purchase chargers from official retailers or reputable brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to mitigate safety risks. While these products may come at a higher price, experts emphasize that the potential dangers associated with cheaper alternatives far outweigh any cost savings.
