A condemned prisoner faced an excruciatingly prolonged death lasting nearly 45 minutes in a failed execution that resulted in a bloody scene and the inmate writhing in pain.

The inmate, Clayton Lockett, aged 38, was handed a death sentence in April 2018 at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in the United States following convictions for murder, rape, and abduction.

Lockett was involved in shooting 19-year-old Stephanie Neiman and witnessing the burial of her alive by two accomplices in 1999. This appalling incident occurred after Neiman and a companion stumbled upon the men during a burglary.

On the day of the execution, the execution team spent over 50 minutes searching for suitable veins before finally locating one in Lockett’s groin area. Court records and reports detailed numerous needle insertions on his arms, legs, and neck.

During the attempt to insert the needle in the groin, a physician accidentally hit an artery, resulting in blood spray that splattered the staff and left the execution chamber in a state of disarray.

Following the administration of the lethal injection, Lockett did not pass away calmly. Witnesses and journalists observed him struggling, raising his head and shoulders from the table, and emitting moans. Approximately 16 minutes into the process, prison officials closed the blinds in the witness room as chaos ensued. It took a harrowing 43 minutes for him to eventually succumb.

A paramedic present remarked to The Guardian: “I told him (redacted) you’ve hit the artery. Well, it’ll be alright [sic]. We’ll proceed with the medications. No. We can’t do that. It doesn’t work that way, and then I wasn’t telling him that.

“I mean, I wasn’t attempting to override his authority, but he seemed a bit anxious… I don’t think he realized he had hit the artery, and I recall saying You’ve hit the artery. We have blood everywhere.”

Courtney Francisco, a local reporter present at the scene, informed the BBC that Lockett was muttering “as if he was attempting to speak.” Lockett’s attorney, David Autry, expressed, “It was a horrific sight to witness. This was a complete failure.”

Governor Mary Fallin ordered an independent inquiry and temporarily halted other planned executions while reviewing Oklahoma’s protocols. A nationwide discussion ensued regarding the drugs used by states and whether midazolam, the sedative employed in this case, provided sufficient unconsciousness.

Critics pointed out that inadequate training for medical personnel and the lack of transparency in procedures contributed to the disaster, not just the drug combination.
