In a comical turn of events, a Conservative member mistakenly requested an extra question during the Prime Minister’s Questions session, much to the amusement of fellow MPs. James Cartlidge, standing in for Kemi Badenoch, found himself in a mix-up when he tried to exceed his allotted six questions, prompting Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy to humorously criticize his counting skills.

Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle had to intervene to clarify that Cartlidge had indeed reached his limit of questions, ending the confusion. Despite the light-hearted moment, tensions rose during a heated exchange between Cartlidge and Lammy regarding the release of asylum seekers, particularly in the case of Hadush Kebatu, an Ethiopian sex offender mistakenly freed from HMP Chelmsford.

Cartlidge repeatedly pressed Lammy on whether any similar incidents had occurred since Kebatu’s release, emphasizing the need for accountability within the justice system. In response, Lammy acknowledged the situation, but also pointed out shortcomings in past policies that have led to current challenges in the prison system.

The exchange culminated in Lammy expressing regret for any distress caused by the incident and highlighting the ongoing efforts to address systemic issues within the justice system. The episode at PMQs showcased both moments of levity and serious discussions on important matters of governance.
