A tragic incident unfolded in Santa Ana, California, as Maria Rubalcava de Ruesga, a 69-year-old grandmother who had successfully fought pancreatic cancer, was fatally struck by a garbage truck while crossing West Bishop Street. The harrowing event took place just after 7 am on a Wednesday, with onlookers, including children and families from Pio Pico Elementary School, witnessing the heartbreaking scene. In response, the Santa Ana Unified School District promptly dispatched a crisis team to provide support to those affected.

Law enforcement officials, in collaboration with the Orange County Fire Authority, swiftly responded to multiple reports of the collision. Upon arrival at the scene, they determined that the bin lorry had collided with Ms. de Ruesga at a roundabout as she was attempting to cross the road.

The driver of the garbage truck cooperated with the investigation and remained at the scene until authorities confirmed Ms. de Ruesga’s tragic demise. Having survived pancreatic cancer and enjoying a year of remission, Ms. de Ruesga’s unexpected passing prompted the initiation of a GoFundMe campaign to assist with her funeral expenses, as reported by the Express US.

Described as someone who had just started feeling like herself again after battling cancer, the campaign highlighted the sudden and profound loss felt by the family. The fundraiser quickly garnered over $7,100 in donations by Sunday evening, with the campaign emphasizing Ms. de Ruesga’s loving and resilient nature, expressing deep shock at her sudden departure.

The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and for the opportunity to give their beloved grandmother a dignified farewell through the fundraising efforts. They encouraged contributions towards the funeral expenses and the sharing of the campaign page during this difficult time.
