Conservation efforts in the United Kingdom to preserve a rare bird species have seen significant progress, largely thanks to the remarkable breeding success of a male Montagu’s harrier named AU. Mark Thomas, a conservationist, credits AU, who has fathered 16 offspring, including 10 in the past two years, for playing a crucial role in sustaining the species in the UK.

Montagu’s harriers, migratory birds of prey, face a declining global population and are considered a species of least concern on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List. In the UK, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) reports a rapid decline in their numbers, with the species nearly disappearing from the country.

AU’s impressive breeding success in recent years has brought hope for the species’ survival in the UK. His acrobatic mating displays and the successful nesting with multiple females have resulted in the birth of six chicks, with conservationists optimistic that his male offspring will contribute to the population in the future.

The nests of the new hatchlings are carefully protected in a top-secret location on a British farm to shield them from predators and other threats. Thomas emphasizes the importance of safeguarding these rare birds and expresses excitement about the opportunity to track their movements using satellite trackers for the first time.

The deployment of satellite trackers on juvenile Montagu’s harriers will enable researchers to monitor their migration patterns and potentially locate their nests if they return to the UK to breed. This innovative approach aims to gather valuable data for conservation efforts and ensure the long-term sustainability of the species.
