A Sudanese asylum seeker, Deng Chol Majek, has been convicted of murdering a hotel worker at a railway station platform. The victim, Ms Whyte, aged 27, was fatally stabbed in the head 23 times on October 20 last year while waiting for a train home after work. During the trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court, evidence showed Majek deliberately brushed into Ms Whyte at the hotel entrance before following her to the station.
CCTV footage revealed Majek’s movements, from the hotel to the station and back, as well as his demeanor with friends at a nearby car park. Despite denying the charges of murder and being present at the scene, Majek’s actions were closely scrutinized during the trial.
Majek, who claimed to be 19 years old but was listed as 27 due to a document error, maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. The authorities in Germany had an incorrect birthdate for him, which he attributed to a mistake in his identification papers.
The Senior Investigator, DCI Paul Attwell, described the attack as brutal and unprovoked, emphasizing the lack of remorse shown by Majek. He praised the victim’s family for their resilience throughout the trial and highlighted the need to remember the victim rather than the perpetrator.
