As the new academic year kicks off, numerous students are delving into a fresh educational experience that is revolutionizing their learning, dietary habits, and overall growth.

A pioneering program called Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools is making a significant impact by supplying millions of nutritious food portions to schools with a high proportion of students receiving free meals. This initiative aims to enhance children’s well-being and academic performance.

Among the beneficiary schools is Ark Putney Academy in southwest London, where comedian Babatunde Aléshé recently visited with a generous provision of fruits and vegetables. Babatunde engaged the students in a lively session about the importance of consuming five servings of fruits and vegetables daily, sparking enthusiasm among the children.

The Fruit & Veg for Schools program was launched in 2024, delivering over 10.8 million healthy food portions to 411 schools in its inaugural year. This year, the initiative has expanded to over 500 schools, ensuring each student receives at least one piece of fruit or vegetable daily.

Feedback from teachers involved in the program indicates a positive impact on student behavior and focus. An overwhelming 94% of surveyed teachers observed improved classroom behavior, increased energy levels, and enhanced concentration among students. Additionally, all teachers unanimously agreed that Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools has positively influenced the lives of the students it has reached.

Babatunde emphasizes the filling and energizing properties of fruits and vegetables, drawing from his childhood experiences with healthy eating. He envisions the far-reaching benefits of the program in educating children about the nutritional value of various fruits and vegetables.

The assortment of items provided includes bananas, blueberries, avocados, and spinach, which can be incorporated into breakfast clubs or utilized in setting up healthy snack stations. This initiative aligns with Tesco Stronger Starts, which supports schools and community groups in promoting healthier lifestyles for children in the UK.

Tesco UK CEO Ashwin Prasad commends the positive outcomes witnessed in schools participating in the Fruit & Veg for Schools program, highlighting the significant impact on children’s well-being and dietary habits. By expanding this initiative, Tesco aims to reach more young individuals in disadvantaged communities, fostering a culture of healthy eating habits.

With an increasing number of schools embracing the program and more fruits and vegetables being distributed, Tesco’s initiative is not just nourishing children but sowing the seeds for a healthier future.
