George Russell has expressed his eagerness to compete directly with Max Verstappen as his teammate at Mercedes, dismissing any concerns about their past disagreements. Verstappen was previously linked with a move to Mercedes but opted to stay with Red Bull to secure his future in Formula One beyond 2025. However, if Red Bull fails to provide a competitive car next season, Verstappen could become available once again.

Mercedes is seen as a potential destination for Verstappen, potentially creating a dynamic partnership with Russell, despite their public clashes in the past. Russell clarified in an interview with The Telegraph that while he and Verstappen are not close, they maintain a professional and respectful relationship.

Regarding their potential partnership, Russell stated that they do not need to be close friends to work together successfully, citing past examples like Senna and Prost, Hamilton and Rosberg, and acknowledging the exceptional case of Hamilton and Alonso in 2007. Russell emphasized his admiration for Verstappen’s driving skills and expressed his excitement at the prospect of competing against him.

As Mercedes and Red Bull battle for the Constructors’ Championship, with Ferrari also in contention, the rivalry between Russell and Verstappen adds an intriguing element to the competition. Verstappen could stay with Red Bull until 2028, benefiting from the team’s progress under Laurent Mekies’ guidance, making them a strong contender under the new regulations next year.
