A teenage girl, aged 14, was reportedly confined to her bedroom and deprived of food for a minimum of two years while her severely overweight family monitored her through a webcam.
Authorities initially mistook the emaciated girl, weighing only 2.5 stone, for a child between six and eight years old when they discovered her in Wisconsin. She disclosed that she had not ventured outside since the age of ten or 12, prompting medical staff to resort to a feeding tube to address her critical malnourishment before she could eat independently.
The girl’s father, Walter Goodman, 47, who alerted emergency services, along with his wife Melissa Goodman, 50, their daughter, Savanna LeFever, 29, and LeFever’s partner Kayla Stemler, 27, all residing in the same household as the victim, have been arrested on multiple charges of prolonged child neglect.
According to official reports, the girl moved in with her father, stepmother, and step-siblings in 2020 following her mother’s imprisonment. Allegations indicate that she had limited access to essential resources, was confined to a locked room with minimal sleeping arrangements, and faced communication restrictions imposed by the adults in the household.
The documents revealed that Walter mentioned withholding food as a form of punishment and admitted to monitoring her through a camera due to past self-harm incidents. He also acknowledged using an alarm on her door.
In a distress call to emergency services, Walter claimed his daughter was vomiting and autistic, a claim disputed by her former teacher. Medical professionals diagnosed the girl with severe malnutrition and multiple organ dysfunctions upon her discovery.
The victim, now stabilized and recuperating with relatives, has shown progress in her recovery journey. A GoFundMe campaign supporting her treatment highlighted her improved physical condition, emphasizing her resilience and positive outlook despite her traumatic past.
Scheduled to appear in court soon, all four accused individuals continue to face legal proceedings in connection with the case.
