Novak Djokovic faced a close call at the Australian Open when he narrowly missed hitting a ball kid in a fit of anger during his match against Botic van de Zandschulp. The incident occurred towards the end of the second set when Djokovic struck a ball in frustration, almost hitting a ball girl stationed near the net.
Had the ball made contact with the youngster, umpire John Blom would have been forced to disqualify Djokovic, a consequence Djokovic experienced at the 2020 US Open after hitting a line judge with a ball. Djokovic quickly apologized and continued the match, ultimately winning in straight sets as he pursues his 11th Australian Open title.
Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash commented on the incident, noting that Djokovic’s shot narrowly missed the ball kid, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. Djokovic acknowledged his luck in winning the match comfortably, attributing his success to strategic observations during the game.
Reflecting on his performance, Djokovic expressed satisfaction with his current form at the tournament but remained cautious, recalling past instances where early excitement led to injuries. Despite facing tough competition from younger players like Alcaraz and Sinner, Djokovic asserted his determination to compete at a high level and continue challenging for titles.
The 38-year-old is aiming for a record-extending 25th Grand Slam victory, a feat that would further solidify his status as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Djokovic remains focused on his journey at the Australian Open, maintaining a competitive spirit and readiness for any challenges that may arise on the court.
