Co-op is set to implement innovative “flexi checkouts” in their stores to reduce waiting times for customers. These smart tills offer the flexibility to switch between self-service and cashier-operated modes based on customer preference. The initiative aims to enhance convenience and efficiency for shoppers.

Supplied by American financial and retail tech company Diebold Nixdorf, the new checkouts will be installed in 150 Co-op stores by April. In addition to the dual-mode functionality, the screens on the checkouts display price discounts, special offers, and promotions. There are potential plans to utilize the technology for parcel collections in the future, making Co-op the first supermarket in the UK to adopt this advanced system.

David Tyas, Co-op’s head of operations, support center, and innovation, emphasized the company’s commitment to local communities. He highlighted the importance of offering both personalized service by interacting with store staff and quick, seamless transactions for customers. The incorporation of the latest checkout technology aligns with Co-op’s strategy to continuously invest in enhancing the shopping experience for all customers.

Furthermore, Co-op recently announced the opening of 18 new or upgraded stores within the first quarter of 2026. The inaugural store for the year 2026 is located in the new development of Willowbrook Park in Didcot, Oxfordshire. Some stores are undergoing renovations, including the convenience store in Eastern Green, Coventry, and a franchise-operated site in Ealing, London.

Kate McCrae, Co-op’s Operations Director, reiterated the company’s focus on creating local stores that serve as community hubs, offering quality products, value, and attractive promotions. She expressed excitement about the launch of the first new store in Oxfordshire in 2026, marking the beginning of an active store expansion program to strengthen Co-op’s presence across the UK.

Moreover, Co-op disclosed plans to establish thousands of new apprenticeships in the coming years. Through a £70 million commitment via its Levy Share service, the retail giant aims to create 7,000 apprenticeships by 2030, demonstrating its dedication to workforce development and growth.
