At least 63 individuals lost their lives following a collision between two buses on a highway in Uganda. The tragic incident occurred when the bus drivers, traveling in opposite directions, tried to overtake other vehicles and ended up crashing head-on. One bus swerved to avoid a collision but instead collided with the other bus, both packed with passengers.

The collision set off a chain reaction, causing both buses to block the highway while oncoming cars swerved and flipped to avoid the wreckage. Rescuers arrived at Kitaleba village to find numerous injured passengers on the roadside, with fears that the casualty count may rise due to severe injuries.

The crash occurred in the early hours of the morning, leaving one bus completely destroyed. Images from the scene depicted a car overturned and workers clearing debris from the damaged vehicles. Additional vehicles caught up in the accident included a Toyota and a Tata lorry truck, with injured passengers receiving medical attention in Kiryandongo.

Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the collision, emphasizing the importance of cautious driving to prevent such tragedies. Uganda has seen a concerning increase in road accidents, often attributed to speeding and reckless overtaking. The police reported that in 2024, 5,144 individuals lost their lives in road crashes, marking a troubling rise compared to previous years.

The latest police report indicated that 44.5% of documented crashes in 2024 were due to careless overtaking and speeding. This highlights the need for motorists to exercise vigilance and adhere to road safety regulations to reduce the incidence of fatal accidents.
