A recent report by consumer group Which? has revealed that major mobile networks like EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2 are falling short in overall performance compared to smaller competitors. Surveying over 5,000 smartphone users nationwide, the study found that lesser-known networks are excelling in value and customer service.

The report aimed to assess which providers meet customer expectations, highlighting that the established “Big Four” are trailing behind smaller rivals. Leading the rankings were Talkmobile, followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. Among the major providers, EE performed the best, ranking ninth, while O2 and Three were among the lowest-ranked networks.

Price emerged as a significant factor, with the Big Four customers paying an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, compared to just £9 for users on smaller networks. Despite the lower prices, smaller providers often leverage major networks’ infrastructure, offering comparable signal strength and service quality without the premium costs associated with well-known brands.

Switching providers is simpler than perceived, with some customers able to change networks in as little as 10 minutes. One Which? member shared their experience of leaving O2 for a cheaper SMARTY plan, saving around £200 annually.

Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outperform major mobile firms in customer service and affordability. She encouraged customers unhappy with their current service or seeking cost savings to consider switching to providers offering better value.

The rankings from Which? showed Talkmobile leading with 83%, followed by Tesco Mobile with 81%, Giffgaff and SMARTY tied at 79%, and Voxi at 79%. Other providers like 1p Mobile, Lebara, Asda Mobile, EE, iD Mobile, Sky Mobile, Vodafone, Lycamobile, O2, and Three were also included in the ratings.
