In Cambridgeshire, a violent stabbing incident on a train over the weekend is not being classified as terrorism, according to the Home Secretary. The suspects, two British-born individuals, were apprehended at the scene in Huntingdon. Emergency services were commended for their rapid intervention, while the courageous actions of both train staff and passengers were praised by Shabana Mahmood.
A 32-year-old British male and a 35-year-old man of Caribbean descent, who is also a British national, are currently in custody. Eleven individuals sustained injuries during the chilling attack on a London-bound LNER train, with nine of them initially facing life-threatening conditions. Fortunately, four of the victims have been discharged from the hospital. The stabbings occurred shortly after the train’s stop in Peterborough.
Following the distressing incident, Ms. Mahmood expressed her sympathy for the victims and their families on Twitter. She extended her gratitude to the British Transport Police, Cambridgeshire Police, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, and the East of England Ambulance Service for their quick and professional response, emphasizing that lives were saved due to their efforts.
British Transport Police Superintendent John Loveless labeled the attack as “shocking” and refrained from speculating on the motive behind the stabbings. He highlighted that the initial arrest was made within eight minutes of the incident being reported. Despite the involvement of counter-terrorism policing at the outset, there is currently no evidence to suggest that the attack was terrorist-related.
The disturbing assault occurred on a train departing from Peterborough station at 7:42 pm. Law enforcement reportedly deployed a Taser against a knife-wielding individual during the incident. Two arrests have been made in connection with the attack on the 6.25 pm service from Doncaster to London King’s Cross on Saturday.
