Sheffield Wednesday faces the possibility of further point deductions as their crisis escalates in the Championship. The club’s position in the league is already precarious following sanctions due to entering administration, but additional penalties loom.

The club is at risk of more repercussions due to their former owner, Dejphon Chansiri, failing to pay staff on time during his tenure. Chansiri’s decade-long ownership of the Owls came to an end when the club was forced into administration.

Consequently, the English Football League (EFL) enforced an automatic 12-point deduction on Sheffield Wednesday, in accordance with regulations established by clubs in 2004. This left the club with a negative six points, placing them at the bottom of the division.

Recent reports suggest that the club might face two more point deductions as a result of delayed salary payments to staff in previous months. The EFL has initiated proceedings against the club, with a disciplinary commission set to review the case.

Following rule changes this year, the EFL’s Club Financial Review Panel will handle the upcoming case concerning additional late salary payments. Any sanctions, including further point deductions, could be imposed as a result.

All disciplinary actions must be resolved before the season concludes, and any point penalties will impact the current campaign. Sheffield Wednesday’s inability to strengthen their squad in the upcoming January transfer window exacerbates their challenges, as they are under strict restrictions on player acquisitions until 2027.

Despite the obstacles, the club has seen some success on the field this season, with young players stepping up amid the turmoil. However, maintaining their Championship status remains a daunting task for the Owls as they navigate through their ongoing difficulties.
